Introduction

Welcome to the O-Skills system! This guide will help you use the system's key features.

What is O-Skills?

O-Skills is a system designed for orienteers where you can:

  • Register for events and training sessions
  • Track your results and progress
  • Analyze GPS tracks
  • Stay connected with other orienteers
  • Join groups and clubs
  • Participate in surveys and provide feedback

Registration and Login

Registration

Registration form

  1. Go to the O-Skills system homepage
  2. Click the "Register" button
  3. Fill out the registration form:
    • Username (unique, cannot be changed later)
    • Email address
    • Password (minimum 8 characters)
    • First name and last name
  4. Accept the terms of use
  5. Click "Register"
  6. You will receive a confirmation email
  7. Click the link in the email to confirm your account
Tip
  • Choose a username that you can easily remember
  • Use a strong password
  • Make sure your email address is correct

Login

Login page

  1. Click the "Login" button
  2. Enter your username and password
  3. Click "Login"

Forgot your password?

  1. Click the "Forgot password?" link
  2. Enter your email address
  3. You will receive a password reset link via email
  4. Click the link and set a new password

Your Profile

Viewing Your Profile

User profile page

  1. Click your username in the top right corner
  2. Select "Profile"
  3. On your profile page you will see:
    • Basic information (name, club, groups)
    • Participation statistics
    • Recent participations
    • Awards and achievements
    • Profile picture

Editing Your Profile

  1. Go to your profile
  2. Click "Edit Profile"
  3. You can edit:
    • First name and last name
    • Date of birth
    • Emit number
    • SI number
    • Slogan (short description of yourself)
    • Privacy settings
  4. Save changes

Profile Picture

Adding a profile picture:

  1. Go to your profile
  2. Click "Profile Pictures"
  3. Click "Upload new picture"
  4. Select an image from your computer
  5. Crop the image as desired
  6. Save

Changing profile picture:

  1. Go to the "Profile Pictures" page
  2. You will see all your uploaded images
  3. Click "Set as active" for the image you want to use
  4. The image will change immediately

Removing profile picture:

  1. Go to the "Profile Pictures" page
  2. Click "Delete" for the image you want to remove
  3. Confirm deletion
Tip
  • Image size: at least 200x200 px
  • Format: JPG or PNG
  • Maximum size: 5 MB

Privacy Settings

Hiding your profile:

  1. Go to "Edit Profile"
  2. Select "Hide profile information from others"
  3. Save
Note

When your profile is hidden:

  • Other users cannot see your information
  • Your participations are still visible in events
  • Friends and coaches can still see your information

Notification Settings

Profile settings

  1. Go to your profile
  2. Click "Settings"
  3. Select "Notifications"
  4. You can specify what you want notifications for:
    • Messages (email/mobile/both)
    • Friend requests
    • Event notifications
    • Registration reminders
    • Group notifications
    • Surveys
  5. Save settings

Notification channels:

  • Email: Receive notifications via email
  • Mobile: Receive push notifications to mobile app
  • Both: Receive notifications to both
  • No notifications: Do not receive notifications for this item

Language Settings

  1. Go to the "Settings" page
  2. Select your preferred language
  3. Save

Available languages:

  • Finnish
  • English
  • Swedish

Dark Mode New

  1. Go to the "Settings" page
  2. Select "Dark mode"
  3. Save

Dark mode saves your eyes and battery, especially in the evening.


Event Participation

Browsing Events

Events listing

Event Calendar:

  1. On the homepage you will see the event calendar
  2. You can filter events by:
    • Date
    • Event type (competition/training/work party)
    • Club
    • Group
  3. Click an event to see more details

Event List:

  1. Click the "Events" link
  2. You will see a list of all upcoming events
  3. You can search for events by name
  4. You can sort events by date

Registering for an Event

  1. Open the event
  2. Click the "Register" button
  3. Select the class you want to participate in
  4. Fill in the required information:
    • Emit number (if required)
    • Club
    • Other additional information
  5. Click "Register"
  6. You will receive a registration confirmation
Warning
  • Check the registration deadline
  • Some events have participant limits
  • You can only register if the event accepts registrations

Canceling Registration

  1. Open the event
  2. Click "Cancel registration"
  3. Confirm cancellation
  4. Your registration will be canceled immediately
Warning

Check the event's cancellation policy. Some events may have a cancellation fee.

Registering as a Coach Coach

If you are a coach, you can register your trainees for events:

  1. Open the event
  2. Click "Register as coach"
  3. Select the trainees you want to register
  4. Select a class for each
  5. Fill in the required information
  6. Click "Register"

Participation History

Your participation history:

  1. Go to your profile
  2. You will see the "Participations" section
  3. You can view participations:
    • By year
    • By month
    • By event

Detailed view:

  1. Click a year or month
  2. You will see all your participations from that period
  3. You can click an event to see your results

Groups and Clubs

Browsing Groups

Groups listing

  1. Click the "Groups" link
  2. You will see a list of all groups
  3. You can search for groups by name
  4. Click a group to see more details

Joining a Group

Public group:

  1. Open the group page
  2. Click "Join group"
  3. Your membership will be activated immediately (if automatic approval is enabled)
  4. OR your membership application will be sent to administrators for approval

Via invitation link:

  1. Click the invitation link you received
  2. Log in (if you are not already logged in)
  3. Confirm joining
  4. You will join the group automatically

Membership application status:

  • Pending approval: Your application has been sent, wait for administrator approval
  • Approved: You are now a member of the group
  • Rejected: Your application has been rejected (you will see a possible reason)

Leaving a Group

  1. Open the group page
  2. Click "Leave group"
  3. Confirm leaving
  4. You will leave the group immediately
Warning

Leaving does not remove your participation history from group events.

Browsing Clubs

  1. Click the "Clubs" link
  2. You will see a list of all clubs
  3. You can search for clubs by name or abbreviation
  4. Click a club to see more details

Joining a Club

Joining a club works the same way as joining a group:

  1. Open the club page
  2. Click "Join club"
  3. Your membership application will be sent to club administrators
  4. You will receive a notification when your application has been processed

Friends and Coaches

Adding Friends

  1. Find a user:
    • Click the "Athletes" link
    • Search for a user by name
    • OR click a user's name somewhere (e.g., in results)
  2. Open the user's profile
  3. Click "Add as friend"
  4. Friend request is sent

Accepting a friend request:

  1. You will receive a notification about the friend request
  2. Click the notification
  3. You will see the friend request
  4. Click "Accept" or "Reject"

Managing Friends

Friend list:

  1. Go to your profile
  2. Click "Friends"
  3. You will see a list of all your friends
  4. You can:
    • View friend's profile
    • Send a message
    • Remove friend

Removing a friend:

  1. Open the friend's profile
  2. Click "Remove friend"
  3. Confirm removal
  4. Friend will be removed immediately

Coaches

Adding a coach:

  1. Add the coach as a friend first. Instructions above. This way you can see your coach's profile.
  2. Find the coach (same way as adding friends)
  3. Open the coach's profile
  4. Click "Add as coach"
  5. Coach request is sent
  6. Coach accepts the request
  7. Coach can now:
    • Register you for events
    • See your results
    • Track your progress

Removing a coach:

  1. Go to your profile
  2. Click "Coaches"
  3. Click "Remove coach" for the coach you want to remove
  4. Confirm removal

Managing trainees (if you are a coach):

  1. Go to your profile
  2. Click "Manage Runners"
  3. You will see a list of all runners you coach
  4. You can:
    • Add a new runner account ("Add Runner")
    • Edit runner basic information (name, email)
    • Remove a runner from coaching (runner account is preserved)
  5. When creating a runner account:
    • Username can be entered manually or auto-generated
    • Email is optional
    • You can assign your club memberships
    • You receive temporary login credentials once (save them immediately)

Results and Analysis

Viewing Your Results

Results page

  • This feature is used very limitedly. Suitable for example for storing test run results.

  • Go to your profile

  • Click "Results"
  • You will see a list of all your results
  • You can filter results by:
    • Year
    • Sport
    • Class
  • Click a result to see details

Viewing Event Results

  1. Open the event
  2. Click "Results"
  3. You will see results by class
  4. You can:
    • Sort results
    • Filter results
    • Export results (CSV/Excel)

Championship Statistics Statistics

Your championship placements:

  1. Click the "Championship Statistics" link
  2. Search by name or club
  3. You will see:
    • All your championship placements
    • Medals
    • Points
    • Statistics by year

Club championship statistics:

  1. Go to the "Championship Statistics" page
  2. Select your club
  3. You will see your club's championship placements and statistics

GPS Tracks

Uploading a GPS Track GPS

GPS tracks page

  1. Go to the "GPS Tracks" page
  2. Click "Upload track"
  3. Select a file from your computer:
    • GPX file
  4. Fill in the information:
    • Event (if related to an event)
    • Description
    • Visibility (public/group/private)
  5. Click "Upload"

Viewing a GPS Track GPS

  1. Open the GPS track
  2. You will see:
    • Map of the track
    • Statistics (distance, time, speed, elevation changes)
    • Speed profile
    • Elevation profile
  3. You can:
    • Zoom the map
    • View details
    • Compare with other tracks

GPS Track Visibility Settings

Visibility options:

  • Public: Everyone can see the track
  • Group: Only your group members can see the track
  • Private: Only you can see the track

Changing visibility:

  1. Open the GPS track
  2. Click "Edit"
  3. Select new visibility
  4. Save

Deleting a GPS Track

  1. Open the GPS track
  2. Click "Delete"
  3. Confirm deletion
  4. Track will be permanently deleted

Default Settings

You can set default settings for new GPS tracks:

  1. Go to the "Settings" page
  2. Select "GPS settings"
  3. Set:
    • Default visibility for tracks
    • Default visibility for events
  4. Save

Messages and Notifications

Sending Messages

Messages inbox

  1. Open a user's profile
  2. Click "Send message"
  3. Write your message
  4. Click "Send"

OR

  1. Click the "Messages" link
  2. Click "New message"
  3. Select recipient
  4. Write your message
  5. Click "Send"

Reading Messages

  1. Click the "Messages" link
  2. You will see:
    • Received messages
    • Sent messages
  3. Click a message to read it
  4. You can reply to a message by clicking "Reply"

Deleting Messages

  1. Open the message
  2. Click "Delete"
  3. Confirm deletion
  4. Message will be moved to trash

Notifications

Notification types:

  • Messages
  • Friend requests
  • Event notifications
  • Group notifications
  • Surveys
  • Membership applications (if you are an administrator)

Viewing notifications:

  1. Click the bell icon in the top right corner
  2. You will see a list of notifications
  3. Click a notification to see more details

Marking notifications as read:

  1. Open notifications
  2. Click "Mark all as read"
  3. All notifications will be marked as read

Notification Settings

You can manage notifications on the "Settings" page (see Notification Settings).


Mobile Application Mobile

O-Skills is also available as a mobile application for iOS and Android.

Installing the Mobile Application

iOS:

  1. Open the App Store
  2. Search for "O-Skills"
  3. Download and install the app

Android:

  1. Open Google Play Store
  2. Search for "O-Skills"
  3. Download and install the app

Logging into the Mobile Application

  1. Open the O-Skills app
  2. Enter your username and password
  3. Click "Login"
  4. The app will remember your login

Mobile Application Features

In the mobile app you can:

  • Browse events
  • Register for events
  • View results
  • Send messages
  • Receive push notifications
  • View and edit your profile

Push Notifications Mobile

Enabling push notifications:

  • During app installation, the app will ask for permission for push notifications.
  • You can later change this setting in your phone's settings.

Push notification types:

  • New messages
  • Friend requests
  • Event notifications
  • Registration reminders
  • Group notifications

Offline Mode Mobile

The mobile app works partially in offline mode:

  • You can view previously downloaded data
  • You can upload GPS tracks (will be sent when connection is restored)
  • You cannot register for events
  • You cannot send messages

Frequently Asked Questions

Registration and Login

Q: I didn't receive a confirmation email.

A: Check your spam folder. If you can't find the message, try registering again or contact support.

Q: I forgot my password.

A: Click the "Forgot password?" link on the login page and follow the instructions.

Q: Can I change my username?

A: No, the username cannot be changed. However, you can create a new account and ask support to transfer your data.

Profile

Q: How do I hide my profile from others?

A: Go to "Edit Profile" and select "Hide profile information from others". Your participations will still be visible in events.

Q: Can I delete my profile picture?

A: Yes, go to the "Profile Pictures" page and click "Delete" for the image you want to remove.

Q: How do I change my email address?

A: Go to the "Settings" page and update your email address. You will receive a confirmation message to the new address.

Events

Q: Why can't I register for an event?

A: There can be several reasons:

  • Registration is not enabled
  • Registration deadline has passed
  • Event is full
  • Event has already ended

Q: Can I cancel my registration?

A: Yes, open the event and click "Cancel registration". However, check the event's cancellation policy.

Q: How do I register my trainee for an event?

A: Open the event and click "Register as coach". Select trainees and fill in the information.

Q: Why don't I see all events?

A: Some events may be:

  • Private (only for members of certain groups)
  • Hidden
  • Old (only upcoming events are shown)

Groups and Clubs

Q: How do I join a group?

A: Open the group page and click "Join group". Your membership application will be sent to administrators for approval (unless automatic approval is enabled).

Q: Why was my membership application rejected?

A: Contact the group administrators. They can tell you the reason and possibly approve your application later.

Q: Can I be in multiple groups?

A: Yes, you can join as many groups as you want.

Q: How do I leave a group?

A: Open the group page and click "Leave group". Leaving is immediate.

Friends and Coaches

Q: What is the difference between a friend and a coach?

A: A friend is a regular connection. A coach can register you for events and see your results.

Q: Can a coach see all my information?

A: A coach can see your results and participation history, but not your private messages or other personal information.

Q: How do I remove a coach?

A: Go to your profile → Coaches → Remove coach.

Results - e.g., test runs

Q: Why don't I see my results?

A: Results are added after the event. If your results are missing, contact the event organizers.

Q: Can results be edited?

A: Only event administrators can edit results. If there is an error in your results, contact the organizers.

Q: How do I compare my results with others?

A: Open the event results and click "Analyze". You can select users you want to compare with.

GPS Tracks

Q: What file formats do GPS tracks support?

A: GPX uploaded from computer, or via Strava connection.

Q: Can I change the visibility of a GPS track afterwards?

A: Yes, open the GPS track, click "Edit" and select new visibility.

Q: How do I delete a GPS track?

A: Open the GPS track and click "Delete". Deletion is permanent.

Mobile Application

Q: Does the mobile app work in offline mode?

A: Partially. You can view previously downloaded data and upload GPS tracks, but you cannot register for events or send messages.

Q: Why am I not receiving push notifications?

A: Check that:

  • You have allowed push notifications for the app
  • You have enabled push notifications in the app settings
  • Your phone's notification settings allow notifications

Q: Can I do everything in the mobile app that I can in the web version?

A: Almost everything. Some administrative functions are only available in the web version.

General

Q: How do I change the language?

A: Go to the "Settings" page and select your preferred language.

Q: How do I enable dark mode?

A: Go to the "Settings" page and select "Dark mode".

Q: Can I export data?

A: Yes, many pages offer export functionality (CSV, Excel, PDF).

Q: How do I delete my account?

A: Contact system support. Account deletion is a permanent action.


Tips and Best Practices

Profile

  • Keep your profile up to date
  • Add a profile picture - it makes identification easier
  • Fill in Emit and SI numbers - they make registration easier
  • Check your privacy settings

Events

  • Register early - don't wait until the last minute
  • Check event details before registering
  • Cancel registration if you cannot participate
  • Provide feedback on events - it helps organizers

Groups

  • Join groups that interest you
  • Participate in group events
  • Answer surveys - they help the group develop
  • Leave groups where you are no longer active

Communication

  • Reply to messages in a reasonable time
  • Be friendly and respectful
  • Don't send spam
  • Use notification settings to manage the amount of messages

Security

  • Use a strong password
  • Don't share your password with anyone
  • Log out on public computers
  • Check your privacy settings regularly
